Green hybrid bus to be trialled in Cairns
IHybrid_Busn a major step toward "greening" Queensland's bus fleet, the State Government is today launching a trial of a hybrid diesel-electric bus in Sunbus Cairns services.

Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall said Cairns was chosen to host the first trial because it has the highest public transport patronage of any regional city, a wide variety of road types and a tropical climate.

"Cairns is the ideal place for us to assess how well the bus performs in many different situations," he said. 

"The trial will assess potential emission reductions and test the viability of hybrid diesel-electric bus technology under various Queensland conditions."

New trial bus service for Redlynch Valley Estate
A new trial Monday to Friday bus service linking Redlynch Valley Estate with Sunbus qconnect services at Redlynch_Bus_Trial_9 Redlynch Shopping Centre will commence today.

Member for Barron River, Steve Wettenhall, said the trial service would operate three times each week day (excludes Saturday and Sunday) for three months (July to September) and a decision on whether to extend this period would then be made depending on patronage levels.

"It really is a case of use it or lose it. I have heard the call from Redlynch Valley Estate residents for a bus service to the estate – and urge residents to remember it will continue only if enough people use it," Mr Wettenhall said.

Cassowaries the Big Winners as National Parks Expanded

Cassowaries have come out the big winners as a new national park is created and a further seven expanded inNational_Park_Announcement_-_Annastacia_Palaszcuk_001 north and far north Queensland.
Acting Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk today joined the Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall at Barron Gorge National Park to announce more than 7,650 hectares worth of new national parks areas in the north.
Among them is the new Macalister Range National Park, part of the Wet Tropics Heritage Area about 25 kilometres North West of Cairns, covering more than 5,000 hectares of important cassowary habitat.
"This is good news for an iconic Australian bird and the many people who have been working hard to ensure its survival," Ms Palaszczuk said.
"Another four of the new protected areas also serve as vital habitat corridors and ecosystems for cassowaries and other rare, native species."
Ms Palaszczuk said the announcement was the latest in the Bligh Government's series of national park expansions in Queensland.

Budget funds tomorrow’s dentists in Barron River
Anna_Bligh_JCU_Tour_098The State Budget will inject $25 million into dental training facilities at James Cook University as well as deliver a raft of key infrastructure projects in the Barron River electorate as part of the Bligh Government's massive building program.

The funding for Barron River was announced today by Treasurer Andrew Fraser as part of the 2010 -11 State Budget.

 

Mr Fraser said the Budget delivers on Labor's promise to create more jobs, sooner.
