Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall has clinched negotiations that will see a kindergarten built at Redlynch by early 2011.

The Early Learning and Care Centre with embedded kindergarten, which will be located at St Andrew’s Catholic College, Redlynch, is a joint venture between the Federal Government and the Bligh Government.

“This project will provide a five room centre with a capacity of 75 full-time places for children from six weeks to kindergarten age and include a quality kindergarten program in two rooms for 44 children,” Mr Wettenhall said.

Mr Wettenhall said the kindergarten service was part of the Bligh Government’s $321 million election commitment to provide access to quality kindy.

“We are building up to 240 kindergartens across the state that will form part of our focus on giving children a flying start into education,” he said.

her win in the Premiers Bike Week Challenge
Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall today congratulated Trinity Beach State School student, Bella Cope, for winning a brand new $300 bike in the inaugural Premier's Bike Week Challenge.

Mr Wettenhall said the challenge was established as a way to encourage primary school students in grades 5 to 7 throughout the State to get involved in cycling.

There were 89 prizes of $300 bike shop vouchers up for grabs in the competition - one winner in each State electorate.

"I'm delighted that grade 7 student, Bella Cope has been selected as the winner from our community and I hope that Bella enjoys her new bike," Mr Wettenhall said.

Jetstar flights re-open the Cairns skies for Japan
The re-instatement of Jetstar's Osaka-Cairns services and the addition of more than 3000 domestic airline seats into Tropical North Queensland was fantastic news for the local tourism industry, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism and Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall said today.

Mr Wettenhall said Jetstar would introduce 18 more domestic weekly flights into Cairns as well as the four-times-a-week Osaka-Cairns service.

"This is great news for Tropical North Queensland after what has been a challenging period for the region's tourism industry," Mr Wettenhall said.

Youth urged to get creative and win
Barron River MP Steve Wettenhall is urging young people in his electorate to get creative and express themselves for the chance to win a share in $6000 worth of prizes.

He said the Live it Now online competition was an opportunity for Barron River's young people to have their voices heard on issues they care about, and to express themselves in a creative way in the lead up to National Youth Week celebrations.

"This is a chance for our local young people to share their thoughts, feelings and opinions about issues that are important to them," Mr Wettenhall said.

"It's a great opportunity for young people to present their ideas and views in a public forum.

New services fly more Kiwis into Tropical North Queensland

Pacific Blue's new international services from Auckland to Cairns will increase seats on the route by 79 percent into Tropical North Queensland, Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said today.

Mr Lawlor said the twice-weekly flights, which begin on Tuesday, March 23 using Boeing 737-800 aircraft, would make it possible for an additional 360 passengers to fly into Cairns each week.

"These new flights will increase capacity on the Auckland-Cairns route by a massive 79 percent, which is great news for Tropical North Queensland after recent tough times for the tourism industry," Mr Lawlor said.

"These additional seats add to the 456 seats already coming into Cairns via three-times-a-week Air New Zealand services from Auckland.

Member for Barron River and Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Steve Wettenhall said the extra services couldn't have come at a better time for the region.
