Adult Bike Bus: Steve with organiser Glenys Duncombe
Following similar initiatives in other Australian cities, a group of cyclists has started the New Year with the establishment of what is believed to be the first ride to work "bike bus" service in the Cairns region.
"A bike bus is a group of people who cycle to work in a group. It's called a "bus" because there is a set route and timetable so it can pick up more "passengers" along the way. Cycling is a quick, fun way to get to work while keeping fit and healthy. A bike bus adds sociability and comfort. And it's zero emission commuting, so you save 1.3 tonnes of greenhouse emissions per annum, for a 10km commute."
A bike bus is also a safer way to commute as the riders ride in single file and are clearly visible along the highway.

Bike Bus for a healthy ride to school |
Ray Plasto (Department Main Roads' Bikebus working Group), Principal Wendy Manners,
Department's Ray Douglas and Carolyn Allis, school bikebus co-ordinator Tony Sheehan
and Steve Wettenhall MP with children
Member for Barron River, Steve Wettenhall, today greeted the Bike Bus providing a greener, healthy ride for students of Holy Cross Catholic School at Trinity Park.
Mr Wettenhall said today's ride was a wonderful part of the school's participation in National Bike Week (March 13-21), which began last Saturday.
"This school has a Bike Bus event each week, where students collectively ride to and from school on their bikes," Mr Wettenhall said.
"It's excellent exercise for them, but even more importantly it teaches them the advantages of using sustainable transport in their daily lives. Hopefully, that message will stay with them through their lives, and maybe they can teach their parents to reduce their reliance on private cars for transport."

Barron River MP Steve Wettenhall has congratulated three young men for being selected for apprenticeships by QBuild based in Cairns.
They are Kurt Madden (electrical mechanic), Thomas Dorante Wymarra (carpenter) and Brandon Marks (refrigeration & air-conditioning mechanic).
The three are among 100 new apprentices and trainees taking up a position in 2010 with QBuild, the Queensland Government's construction and maintenance organisation.
"A QBuild apprenticeship is highly regarded in the industry and future tradies like Kurt, Thomas and Brandon should be proud they have been offered one," Mr Wettenhall said."

Cairns Road Safety Summit drives new alcohol interlock laws |
|
Barron River MP Steve Wettenhall today welcomed new laws introduced to State Parliament that will see repeat drink drivers pay for the installation of alcohol interlockers in their vehicles to keep them off the road.
Mr Wettenhall said drink driving had been one of the major concerns raised at the Cairns Road Safety Summit held in November last year - and attended by Queensland Government Senior Cabinet Ministers - to address the road toll in the Far North region.
"Drink driving was identified as a major concern at last year's summit, so I'm delighted that this Government is today introducing alcohol interlockers as part of our crack down on road fatalities," Mr Wettenhall said.
"About 700 drink driving offenders are picked up on Far North Queensland roads each year," Mr Wettenhall said.

Cairns: Sports funding up for grabs |
|
The Bligh Government's new package of sport and recreation funding programs will deliver more than $138 million to create jobs, help build infrastructure and deliver initiatives to encourage Queenslanders to take part in sport and recreation activities.
Sport Minister Phil Reeves today encouraged Far North Queensland sport and recreation groups to attend a workshop to find out what funding was available for their organisation.
"I recently announced four new programs to fund sport and recreation organisations, councils and schools to help them increase participation, recruit volunteers, and encourage disadvantaged communities to participate in sport," Mr Reeves said.
"Community groups will also be eligible for some funding programs.
"We're committed to providing opportunities for as many people as possible to get active to help make Queenslanders Australia's healthiest people."
