Two Cairns Disaster Resilience Projects Attract State, Federal Funding
Cairns Regional Council will receive more than $130,000 in joint State and Federal Government funding for two projects aimed at enhancing the city's resilience to natural disasters.

Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall said the two projects had a combined value of more than $200,000, with the Cairns Regional Council also contributing funding.

"With the changing weather patterns, it is likely natural disaster events in Queensland will be more regular and more severe in coming years," Mr Wettenhall said.

"That is why the Bligh Government has partnered with the Rudd Government to provide $44 million in funding over four years through the Natural Disaster Resilience Program to help minimise the impact of natural disasters on Queensland communities.

"I commend the Cairns Regional Council for its willingness to partner with the State and Federal governments on this important initiative."

Mr Wettenhall said the Cairns Region Evacuation Strategy would be finalised at a cost of $115,000 while the Cairns CBD South Flood Mitigation program would be undertaken at a cost of $90,000.

"These projects align perfectly with the objectives and priorities of the Natural Disaster Resilience Program," he said.

"By undertaking these projects the Cairns community will be better-placed to respond to - and recover from - future natural disasters.

"The program is just another demonstration of the Bligh and Rudd Governments' commitment to emergency services and community resilience."
