Duk_of_Edinborough_Award_Sean_ODea_003Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall today congratulated young local Sean O'Dea who was among 48 young Queenslanders to receive Duke of Edinburgh awards at Parliament House recently.

Mr Wettenhall said the Gold Award, earned by Sean, was an internationally-recognised symbol of leadership, teamwork and decision-making skills.

"The awards help young Queenslanders gain knowledge, skills and attitudes that go hand-in-hand with healthy and fulfilling lifestyles," Mr Wettenhall said.

"I congratulate Sean on reaching the highest level of the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

"Over the past year, Sean has volunteered as a State Emergency Service cadet deputy leader, hiked on Hinchinbrook Island and participated in karate.

"The skills he developed to earn the award will help him achieve his full potential."

Community Services Minister Karen Struthers presented the awards to adult volunteers to participants in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards on Aug 1.

"Almost six million young people have participated in the award in more than 120 countries over the last 50 years," Ms Struthers said.

"The program couldn't be as successful as it is without the hard work of volunteers.

"I congratulate local volunteers for their wonderful service and effort."
