Mobile-friendly website in time for storm and cyclone season

Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall is urging Barron River residents to be as prepared as possible this cyclone and storm season.

Mr Wettenhall said a convenient way to do so is to carry the up to date information around in your pocket.

"Ergon Energy's website is now smart phone-friendly ensuring customers can access information during the coming storm and cyclone season," Mr Wettenhall said.

"Customers can now access www.ergon.com.au/mobile on their smart phone without the need to download an app.

"Customers can then check out planned and unplanned power outages in their area, view important information about how to stay safe during storms, floods and cyclones, and to find out how to contact Ergon Energy.

"It's better to be prepared this storm season than put yourself or the lives of your loved ones at risk."

Ergon Energy's General Manager Service Delivery Northern Paul Ryan said the storm and cyclone season potentially could impact power supply and threaten public safety.

"People should make safe, be safe and stay safe. The first thing to do is to make safe by clearing yards of material that could become potential missiles and have an emergency kit ready," he said.

"One of the biggest dangers during gale force winds is flying debris, which can pose a threat to powerlines and people, so it's important to clear yards, or tie down loose items like roofing iron and outdoor furniture.

"Each home should have an emergency kit containing torches and batteries, canned food, bottled water, a can opener and self-contained cooking facilities.

"Mobile phones should be kept fully charged and people should have a traditional analogue phone, as cordless phones and those with built-in answering machines will not operate during a power outage.

"It might also be a good idea to have a mobile car charger or battery charger as back-up."

The next step is to be safe.

"All electrical devices should be unplugged at the power point to protect them from damage. People should stay indoors during a storm or cyclone and listen for updates on a battery-powered radio," he said.

Once the storm or cyclone has passed, it doesn't mean the danger has, so you must ensure you stay safe.

"Fallen powerlines can be extremely dangerous. Stay away and report them to emergency services on 000 or contact Ergon Energy on 13 22 96," he said.

"Swimming in floodwaters can be hazardous as they could hide fallen powerlines and I'd ask parents to warn their children and keep them out of the water."

Ergon Energy's plans for power restoration and tips to prepare for the storm and cyclone season can be found at www.ergon.com.au/outages--and--disruptions/storms-and-disasters.

For customers to access www.ergon.com.au/mobile on their smart phone all that's needed is a mobile device that can access the web, and has 'JavaScript' enabled. Customers should check their mobile device manual for further information.
