Community groups in Barron River buoyed by pre-Easter grant funding
A baseball league and a kindergarten are among eight not-for-profits in Barron River who will share in more than $190,629 in funding from the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. The hard-working community groups would receive up to $30,000 in pre-Easter grant funding to help ease the squeeze during these tough economic times.

"Like everyone, our State's community groups are doing it tough in an effort to continue providing frontline services to Queensland families and individuals," Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall said.

"With these groups relying heavily on volunteers, community goodwill and donations to survive, they have very limited capacity to absorb pressure created by the current global economic crisis.

"That's why the Queensland Government remains committed to supporting these groups who serve, support and help build strong Queensland communities." Mr Wettenhall said.

Mr Wettenhall said nearly 600 Queensland community groups would share in close to $12 million in funding from the Fund's 59th round.

"The Gambling Community Benefit Fund helps grassroots community groups to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities to Queenslanders in their local communities," he said.

The successful grant recipients in Barron River are:

  • St John's Community Care, Redlynch, $30,000 to purchase a vehicle
  • Half Moon Bay Golf Club, Yorkeys Knob, $27,272 to construct a golf cart shed
  • Peace Lutheran College Outside School Hours Care $23,541to purchase furniture, computers and resources

  • Yorkeys Knob State School P&C $21,184 to upgrade the tuckshop and

Following the 59th round of grant allocations, the Fund has provided more than $402 million to more than 34,000 community projects since its inception. Funding is sourced from taxes collected on Golden Casket lotteries, wagering, keno and gaming machines.
