$525 000 secures land for Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre
A modern, purpose-built neighbourhood centre servicing Marlin Coast communities is a step closer to reality with the purchase of a suitable block of land at Trinity Park.

Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall announced the Bligh Government had provided $525 000 to acquire the Reed Road property (Cr Reed Rd, O'Brien Rd) for the new and improved Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre at Trinity Park.

Marlin_Coast_Neighbourhood_Centre_016"For nearly two decades the centre has supported Marlin Coast communities with services ranging from parenting support groups to social connection activities for older people," he said.

"But, we are seeing an increased demand for service, and as a result, the centre is operating at maximum capacity.

"This need will see the existing centre expand and move from its current location in Cumberland Avenue, Smithfield to Trinity Park, with an additional $1.5 million allocated for its construction."

Mr Wettenhall said the board would ensure the new centre reflected the community's needs.

"The new centre at Trinity Park is being designed in close consultation with the neighbourhood centre's board of elected community volunteers to ensure it caters to the future needs and aspirations of the community," he said.

"I'm delighted that funds have been set aside to expand the centre and enable the Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre to continue the great work they're doing."

Community Services Minister Karen Struthers said it was strong lobbying by the Member for Barron River that helped to secure funding for the new centre.

"Steve is a strong supporter of the centre, and as a local, he understands that families and individuals rely on its services for support, particularly when times are tough. These funds are all about continuing that support for the community," Ms Struthers said.

Construction is planned to start in August with the new Marlin Coast Neighbourhood Centre expected to be Operational by about October 2010.
