Telstra has also advised that customers will get free fixed line telephone calls to the natural disaster-hit regions of Indonesia and American Samoa to check on family and friends. Telstra's residential customers will not be charged for calls to fixed-line numbers in Padang (Indonesia) and American Samoa made from their home fixed-line telephones from 12:01am (AEST) Saturday October 3 until 11:59am (AEDT) on Friday October 9. Calls made to the disaster affected areas during this time will automatically be billed at zero. While some communication lines are now operating in these areas, congestion is likely and we encourage customers to remain patient as difficulties may still be experienced when trying to connect. If customers find they have been billed for calls during the allocated free period they should call Telstra to request a rebate. The Australian Red Cross are conducting national appeals for the Pacific Tsunami, Indonesian Earthquake and Typhoon Ketsana disasters.
