Fair Trading makes a Smart move
The State Government has launched a new range of Smart Guides to equip Queenslanders with important consumer protection information, Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall said.

Mr Wettenhall said the pocket-sized guides were introductions to a wealth of information for consumers.

"The four guides on offer are Buy Smart, Property Smart, Car Smart and Retire Smart. The guides aim to raise the awareness of consumers when they are considering making major purchasing decisions," he said.

"The new streamlined guides deliver clearer and more user-friendly information to Queensland consumers.

Buy Smart is a general guide to buying products and services in Queensland, which includes information on consumer rights and responsibilities, refunds and warranties and warnings about scams and fraud.

Property Smart provides information for consumers who are considering buying or selling a property and advice on obtaining finance and the costs involved.

The Car Smart guide includes information on buying a new or used car, attending auctions and hints on vehicle repairs and maintenance.

Retire Smart offers older Queenslanders details on retirement living options along with advice on residence contracts, dispute resolution and fees and maintenance.

"While these concise guides are fantastic sources of information, the Office of Fair Trading website also includes dedicated consumer sections on refunds and warranties, credit, motoring and insurance.

"It contains fantastic consumer advice for Queenslanders when they are looking to purchase major items such as a house, car, insurance or whitegoods, along with hints for older people who may be moving into a retirement village or looking to retire.

"Given the challenging economic climate, it is more important than ever for consumers to be fully aware of their rights when they shop.

"It is vital consumers have a strong understanding of their rights in the market place so they can buy with confidence and avoid pitfalls along the way."

The guides are available by calling 13 13 04 or visiting www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au.
