$250,000 to move four younger people with disabilities out of Cairns Base Hospital
Four Far North Queenslanders with a disability will be moved from Cairns Base Hospital into purpose built accommodation in Gordonvale, thanks to a $250,000 funding boost from the Bligh Government.

Disability Services Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk today (11 January) made the announcement on a visit to Cairns.

Ms Palaszczuk said four extra people would get accommodation and support at St John's Community Care in Gordonvale under the Younger People in Residential Aged Care (YPIRAC) initiative.

She said the $250,000 funding boost was part of the five-year $47.8 million YPIRAC initiative jointly funded by the Queensland and Commonwealth Governments.

"This is a great outcome for these four people and their families," Ms Palaszczuk said. "It gets them into more suitable purpose-built accommodation among people from their own age group.

"Already one of the residents has moved to St John's and the other three are expected to move in next month.

"We're tackling this issue head-on with these extra funds, ensuring that people get the care and support they need where they need it while freeing up hospital beds for those who need them most."

Ms Palaszczuk said the Bligh Government was committed to providing younger people with a disability with better accommodation and support options.

"This is about giving younger Queenslanders with a disability more choices and it's about ensuring they're not prematurely forced into aged care facilities," she said.

"These four people will get short-to-medium term accommodation and support at St John's while longer term support options are put in place.

"Getting younger people with a disability out of hospitals and aged care facilities and into purpose-built accommodation is one of my key priorities. That's what's happening here in Far North Queensland, and we'll continue to invest in these facilities in other parts of the State."

Ms Palaszczuk said St John's had already received $2.3 million to support 10 younger Queenslanders as part of the YPIRAC initiative.

"Across Queensland, there are 90 younger people with disabilities who have avoided entering aged care under this initiative," she said.

"Thanks to these extra funds, there are now 14 people benefiting from the initiative in the Cairns region. It's another sign of the Bligh Government's commitment to the Far North, and part of our vision to create a fairer Queensland."
