| Do you think we should have a referendum on Daylight Saving in South East Queensland? |
|
Premier Anna Bligh has asked me to provide feedback on support or opposition by mid-May for the introduction of a South East Queensland trial and a referendum, potentially from this summer.
I am asking residents in my electorate to have their say on whether Queensland should have a split time zone trial, followed by a referendum. Previously, the Queensland Government has categorically ruled out Daylight Saving for the entire state and the Premier remains opposed to any consideration in that regard. This week, Independent MP Peter Wellington introduced a Private Members Bill to have a referendum on two time zones for Queensland. For this reason, the Premier has revisited the Daylight Saving issue to find out exactly what Queenslanders want for the South East in regard to split time zones. I do have my reservations about split time zones in Queensland and I believe that dividing the state on the basis of time zones would be an unpopular decision. However, I do welcome feedback on this issue as it is imperative we get this right. It has been 18 years since we had a referendum on the issue of daylight saving in Queensland and there is a whole generation of Queenslanders who have never had a say on the issue. I would be interested to hear your thoughts about the split time zone in Queensland and you can do this by emailing me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
