Surrogacy Bill; Family (Surrogacy) Bill |
Mr WETTENHALL (Barron River-ALP) (10 February 2010, 4.28 pm): I rise to support the Surrogacy Bill 2009. Until becoming a member of the committee of the Queensland parliament that investigated the decriminalisation and regulation of altruistic surrogacy in 2008, I must admit that I had given little thought to the issues surrounding surrogate parenthood. That was all to change because during the course of the committee's inquiry-but particularly after listening to the evidence and reading the submissions of people who are directly affected by the current state of the law in Queensland-it did not take long for me to reach the view that it was quite wrong for it to remain a criminal offence to enter into an altruistic surrogacy arrangement in Queensland.

Criminal Code (Abusive Domestic Relationship Defence |
|
Mr WETTENHALL (Barron River-ALP) (9 February 2010, 7.40 pm): I rise to support the bill before the House. I join with other members in congratulating the Attorney-General on bringing forward this very important and significant amendment to the Queensland Criminal Code. I also echo the comments made by many other members in recognising and acknowledging the important work that various organisations in our community do to support survivors of domestic violence. Many of them have contributed to the development of these important and significant amendments. I want to mention a couple, in particular the North Queensland Women's Legal Service and the Women's Legal Service in Queensland.

As part of the Premier's highly successful trade mission to the United States earlier this year, the government has announced a partnership between Qantas Airways, Tourism Queensland and Tourism Tropical North Queensland to promote a deal which offers Americans the chance to fly from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Cairns from US$898 and receive a free stopover in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Auckland.

Integrity Bill and Commissions of Inquiry (Corruption, Cronyism and Unethical Behaviour) Amendment Bill |
|
Mr WETTENHALL (Barron River-ALP) (8.08 pm): I rise to support the Integrity Bill. This bill marks yet another significant milestone for successive Labor governments in this state since 1989. Ever since the revelations of the Fitzgerald inquiry that exposed systemic corruption in police and government at the highest level, Labor governments have developed the strongest and most effective system of integrity and accountability measures in the country.
