Telecommunications Interception Bill 2009. In doing so, I acknowledge that it would have been much more difficult for me to support legislation of this kind if it had not contained the important safeguard of the involvement of the Public Interest Monitor.

Vegetation Management (Regrowth Clearing

Mr WETTENHALL (23 April 2009) (4.40 pm): I rise to participate in the debate on the
Vegetation Management (Regrowth Clearing Moratorium) Bill 2009. I support this bill and wish to briefly touch on a couple of issues. The member for Mundingburra has mentioned the importance of the Great Barrier Reef not only to locals and their lifestyle but also to employment, with the Great Barrier Reef being the single biggest attractor for tourism to Queensland and important particularly to North Queensland and tropical North Queensland.

Tourism Industry
Mr WETTENHALL (22 April 2009) (12.00 pm): The effects of the global economic recession are already being felt in Queensland's tourism industry. There is little doubt that operators are facing one of their toughest years in two decades. It is therefore critical that government work closely with industry to ensure that the policy and regulatory settings are right for the times and that appropriate public infrastructure is available to support the industry.

Natural Disasters

Mr WETTENHALL (11 Feb 2009) (9.28 pm): The floods in north Queensland have affected thousands of people from the gulf to Mount Isa, Townsville, Cairns and of course the long-suffering people of Ingham, and seven people have lost their lives. In In a testament to the spirit of the people of the north, however, they have been quick this week to put their hardships into perspective following the tragic bushfires in Victoria.
