No. 699 Friday 19 June 2009

Mr Wettenhall asked the Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability (Ms Jones) -
Will the Minister advise the number of registrations for the Climate Smart
Home Service in the Cairns region and what benefits this may produce for the environment?

ANSWER:
The ClimateSmart Home Service has received a tremendous response from
Queenslanders. As at 16 July, more than 75,000 services have been provided
to Queenslanders, with over 87,000 bookings received.

Within the Cairns region more than 3,600 households have registered for the
service.

We expect that a home undertaking the service, and changing its ongoing
electricity usage behaviour, can save a total of up to 20.4 tonnes of
greenhouse gas emissions over the average eight year life of the greenhouse
friendly products installed and up to $250 on their annual electricity bills.

This equates to taking 4 cars off the road for a year. If 260,000 households
undertake a full service, Queensland will save a total of approximately 5.3
million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over the life of the products; this
is the equivalent of taking 1.24 million cars off the road for a year.

This Queensland Government initiative is providing a win for Queenslanders
and the environment.
