Mr Wettenhall asked the Minister for Disability Services and Multicultural Affairs (Ms Palaszczuk) — Will the Minister inform the House what Home and Community Care Services are available to assist residents in the Barron River Electorate?
ANSWER
The Bligh Government is committed to working with the Federal Government through the Home and Community Care (HACC) program to deliver programs and services that assist frail seniors, and younger people with disabilities, to live independently for longer in their own homes.

These services ensure that people can remain living among friends and family, in their own homes, and allow them to take part in their community.

People living in the Barron River electorate have access to a range of services including: domestic assistance, centre based day care, social support, personal care, respite care, allied health care, nursing care, home maintenance, home modifications, counselling/support, information and advocacy, meals and transport.

In 2009–10, the Bligh Government has provided more than $5 million in Home and Community Care funding to the following service providers located within the Barron River electorate;

  • Ngoonbi Home and Community Care
  • Thursday Island Respite Services
  • St John's Respite Services
  • Far North Queensland Home Assist Secure
  • Multicultural Access Service
  • St John's Community Transport Service
  • Marlin Coast Day Respite
  • Private Housing Programs, Department of Communities (Housing)
  • Blue Care Cairns

The Home and Community Care program also supports Meals on Wheels services throughout Queensland. Meals on Wheels are one of our best known and loved organisations and are invaluable to many frail seniors, and younger people with disabilities.
